MoonShInE

I wonder what the moon looked like when its shine didn't have to compete with the city light.

 new shoes, graduation-style

red velvet cake (no we didn't make it, but we did eat it!)

What She Said

BOXES.  man boxes. woman boxes.

As Mia Love says "... I don’t allow anybody to put me in a box."

So I like to shop
to RUN
to giggle
to FISH.

Sure I may be a girl
a lady
a woman.
BUT,  more importantly
I AM A HUMAN BEING.

But what makes YOU
think
I won't respond
to your
shouts-whistles-namecalling

"hey baby"
"hey what's your number"
"hey! white girl"

if we are being completely honest...
"hi daddy?"
"tell me yours first?"
"hello, black boy?"

do ladies say these things to gentlemen as they walk down the street...?
do men feel uncomfortable walking down a physically safe sidewalk
only to be mentally verbally socially bothered or abused in some instances?
[{(sometimes, the answer is yes.  verbal abuse is not a thing just women deal with)}]

it is during these times
heart pounding
eyes to the ground
feet moving faster
that i feel the walls of the box.

although at this moment,
i'm not a girl
lady
woman.
HUMAN BEING.

i've been objectified
i am a 'thing'

sexism exists
exploits
tears us DOWN.

how do we know?
we don't know...
we FEEL it,
LIVE it,
EVERY DAY.

"Boxes" TO BE CONTINUED...

* notes: the left-justified quotes are actual words i have heard said to me.  i am not intending to address race in this post, and i also do not intend to make it seems as though there is a typical racial profile of the verbal agressor.  i would like to acknowledge the intersectionality of racism/sexism/classism (and hope to write about it in future blog posts).

Weekend Food Adventures

 Ham and Scalloped Potatoes
Key Lime Cheeseball!  (keylime cheesecake in spreadable form)  it's really yummy :) photo by B

Pepperoni Pizza (ok, so B had nothing to do with this one... i actually made it tonight. )

I am semi-ashamed to admit that Briana and I went to Ted Drewes (http://teddrewes.com/home/default.aspx) no fewer than 2 times in 24 hours.  Although none of the photos below include the yummy concretes we bought (because we ate them in haste), here are a few of the meals we made this weekend.

Moley Lab Shenanigans

View of the lunch room and spectacular view FROM the lunch room!

CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Katie,  PhD!  Our lab celebrated the completion of her thesis work ( and successful defense) last Monday.

Katie's cake!  The image is Glucose Transporter 8 (although 'up' is intracellular... aka it's upside down).

The goodies!

These are the people with whom I work.  Katie's normal, but Brian, not so much.  In a good way, of course!
 Sister power!
This is C!  She had a great time running around, eating cake, and being the life of the party!
What a beautiful family!  Congrats again :)

SPRINGTIME IN THE LOU: the final chapter

I had been meaning to get to Forest Park and snap some "Springtime in the Lou" pictures for about a month now.  I finally worked up the courage to walk to the big FP this morning (read: decided not to be lazy), and here are a few of the edited pictures. I inadvertently took a lot of pink & green ones. If you're not sure what pink and green mean to me, please see http://www.dmstl.org/ :)
